Scared of going under anesthesia in Korea - is it safe?
I am really scared about having surgery under general anesthesia in Korea. While I trust Korean surgical skills, I am worried about anesthesia safety standards. Are Korean anesthesiologists properly qualified? Do reputable clinics have full-time anesthesiologists or do they bring in part-time ones? What safety equipment should a clinic have? I have heard some horror stories about clinics cutting corners on anesthesia to save costs. How can I ensure the clinic I choose takes anesthesia safety seriously? Are there any red flags I should watch out for during my consultation?

Anesthesia safety is a fair thing to vet. At reputable Korean clinics, general anesthesia should be administered or supervised by a board-certified anesthesiologist who stays present throughout — ask directly whether a full-time anesthesiologist (마취과 전문의) will be in the room, not just a nurse or the surgeon. Look for standard monitoring (ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography, blood pressure), emergency equipment and medications, and ideally accreditation. Red flags: vagueness about who provides anesthesia, pressure to do very long combined surgeries under deep sedation, no clear pre-op health screening, or unusually cheap pricing. A good clinic will answer these questions transparently and may do bloodwork/ECG before surgery. Disclose your full medical history and any prior anesthesia reactions.
